Horse of a Different Color

One of the things I love about printmaking is that I can make lots of variations with the same basic image. It is so exciting to experiment with different media and colors of ink and maker. Adding marks here and removing them there.

I had an intaglio print that I embellished with watercolor, ink, and various papers. I then mounted the on either Rives BFK or Somerset paper that was torn to approximately 11" x 15". The print sizes are all about 5.5" x 10.5" and mounted on a torn sheet of decorative paper that is roughly 11" x 13". All prints are $165.00 each.

Sometime the differences are small, and the prints have the same mood or feel. Other times they are huge.

The one above is one of the intaglio prints I embellished blue watercolor,silver ink, 23 karat gold leaf, and chiyogami paper. The one below has been embellished with blue watercolor, silver ink, 23 karat gold leaf, and an asian silk screened paper.

I love the possibilities for variations I can achive with these.

It should be noted the first image was photographed by Tom Alexander, the other pictures I took.

I love embellishment. Adding watercolor, gold leaf, ink, graphite, paper, whatever is at hand, and whatever the piece calls for. It is like putting together a puzzle, or figuring out a mystery. I love solving the riddle of creating a piece of art.

This was just such a riddle. I started out with an intaglio on Rives BFK and started adding watercolor and gouache, then ink. The final flourish, 23 karat Italian gold leaf. I am not sure it is really from Italy, but the name is romantic and adds a air of history for me. Image size is 12" x 12" on larger paper.

I am sorry I didn't take a picture of the line etch. The line etch is similar to a blue print. It gives me a clear guideline on which I can start building my textures and values.

The second proof was pulled after I applied a soft ground to the plate, ran it through the press, placed it in an acid bath, and then printed it to proof it.

Next I aquatinted it and achieved a slightly darker value on the tail.

Today I will proof the second aquatint and see what other adjustments need to be made.
