Before Day One

Before I started Day One there was the unglamorous work of creating the support.

I assembled the stretcher bars and cut the canvas.

Then I stretched the canvas and stapled it to the frame.

At this point I gessoed it, waited for it to dry and sanded the surface. I do this three time.

Then I started applying thin washes of acrylic colour. I do several times until I achieve a surface that I am ready to paint on.

This all happens before Day One.

Some paintings seem to have their own timeframe. They can not be forced into being finished, they have to evolve. To unfold. To emerge in stages. No amount of struggling to make it happen sooner works. This can be very frustrating for the artist, especially  if they are working on a deadline.

This is just such a painting. It won't be completed until sometime next year, so I have something to look forward to.

 There are times as a painter I am completely unsure of what I am doing. The doubt arrises due to a number of factors. Doing something different or using colours I don't normally use seems to push me into this state.
Am I just uncomfortable because it's different?
I don't know. Today however, I am willing to publish this. I am not sure if it is finished or not. Who knows the paint fairies might come it and finish it for me. You just never know.

I have a show opening in May. I am working on several paintings at the moment. I want to share, but........they are so far from finished.

Here is a detail of a painting that is 6 ~ 20" x 20" panels.

Now, back into the studio.

I love my photographer! Not only does he do a fantastic job of shooting my artwork, but he prints them as well. The images are always incredible. The colour is spot on and the finishes beautiful.

The image above of the matted and sleeved and ready to go prints are by me and I a lousy picture taker. The prints themselves are beautiful.

The images are printed on Epson Somerset Velvet, 255 gram using an Epson 9900 using Ultrachrome K-3 Ink. All very State of the Art and way beyond my understanding of such things. They look gorgeous.

I was working at West of the Moon Gallery last friday for First Friday Art Walk. Shonto Begay is the featured artist there  this month and he has quite a following.I was not surprised that the Gallery was full to crowed from 6:00 to 9:30 but, I was amazed by how many people were out and about.

Towards the end of the evening I was talking to another artist who had an opening reception that night at another gallery. He was very please with the turn out and response to his paintings and that he had sold some of his art. One of the painting that he sold was not the painting that received the most compliments. We then started talking about how we each have two or three pieces of artwork that people love. They are always talked about with great excitement and highly praised, and we both still have these paintings. We just figure that whoever is suppose to own them just hasn't come along yet.

I love this painting. It's hanging up in my studio and everyday it makes me smile. I can look at it for hours and often wonder how did I paint this.

New Painting

This is one of the panels of a diptych that will be going to Churchill Gallery in Newburyport, Mass. later this month. It is oil on canvas and the complete work is 30" x 50" when hung. I am currently still pondering the title of this piece.

"Blue Note; Surfacing"

One day when I was watching the horses graze under the trees, I was intrigued by the play of light and shadow across their backs. The patterns kept shifting with the breeze and the horses languid walk as the looked for the sweetest grass.

The next time I went out to the farm, there they were in their favorite place. The light weaving a wonderful tapestry across them. Tomorrow I would bring a camera.

A few days later a friend of mine looked at the photos. “What are these about?” she asked. I am notorious for taking bad pictures, she thought these were no exception. I explained the light to her, she wasn’t impressed.

Over the next few weeks I used the photos as a rough road map. The murky, slightly out of focus pictures encouraged me to lose and find lines. To allow shapes to emerge and disappear. Layering veils of colour upon colour. To focus on small areas and not lose sight of the “Big Picture”.

That fall she came into the studio and saw the painting. She looked at me and smiled. “I get it now.”
