Inspiration

L'air du Temps
Oil on Canvas
40" x 60"
7950.00
Available Now as a Limited Edition Print

Inspiration is a funny thing. It is the beginning point. The place you start from and the place when I am finished I return to and ask myself if I held true to the inspiration or did I take a wild detour and land in a place far away from where I started?

My introduction to Lipizzaners was very typical. I was captivated by the Wesley Dennis's illustrations in Henry's book The White Stallion of Lipizza, I watched Disney's The Miracle of the White Stallions and I was smitten. I wanted one of those beautiful white horses that could leap into the air and preform capriole!

At this point if someone would have given me a 30 year old welsh pony I would have been over the moon.

When you're young, dreams and fantasy have not been dulled yet by the realities of life. Your imagination has no boundaries. Your heart knows how to sing and how to fly.

If this painting gives you a glimpse back to when you clutched at your heart when you look at a magical white beast leap into the air, then I held to my inspiration.

This painting is now being offered as a limited edition print.

Mad about Yupo

Comin' In
17.5 x 23
Mixed Media on Yupo
Sold

I LOVE the surface of this paper. Yupo is a synthetic paper made by a company in Virginia. It has soft and velvety texture. It accepts the charcoal and will then release it, leaving only a ghost of the line. A line like the memory of a dream.

I have been using acrylic, and gesso, and charcoal, and water-soluble graphite on it. I have been working with a limited colour palette, and yet I feel there is so much to still explore with in these boundaries. It's intoxicating, I love being a painter.

Worth the Wait

The Good Ride
40" x 60"
Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas
7950.00

There is nothing quite like a hack through the burgeoning southern countryside in the spring. It is the warmth of the sun and the lingering coolness of the earth. The soft colours ripening into a vibrant display. Honey drifts on the air, And, if you are lucky, really luck, you have a good horse to take you over a fence or two.

It was worth the wait. This image is so sharp and clear, I could have been more pleased with the photo. I am so grateful to have a fantastic photographer who is also a genuinely nice guy. I always look forward to seeing him. Thank you Tom Alexander.

The Grey

The Grey
Mixed Media on Paper

There is something romantic and unerringly heartbreaking in the soft and gentle expression of the eye of a grey horse. If you have ever had a grey in your life you understand this.

This painting is composed of watercolour, 23 karat gold leaf, ink, and acrylic paint on 300 lb Saunders Waterford watercolour paper and is currently available.

Please contact me if you are interested in acquiring this painting.

Lighting and Living with Artwork.

L'Air du Temps
hanging at
 Hidden Light

L'Air du Temps
photographed at
Tom Alexander's Studio
40" x 60"
Oil on Canvas
$7950.00

Color is so subjective and reactive. This is the same painting photographed by the same photographer. The top painting was photographed hanging at Hidden Light. The warm wood tones really heat up the color in the painting. Notice how creamy the white of the horse is and how much stronger the yellows and reds appear.

The bottom painting was photographed in the studio and is a very true representation of the original art work. The light in the studio mimics sunlight and allows for the full spectrum of color to be shown.

I love it when someone who has purchased one of my paintings sends me a photograph of it hanging in it's new home. It takes on a different persona, one I feel is a reflection it owners.

Thank you Tom Alexander for always photographing my artwork true to form.

Roses and Violets

Untitled Horse in Roses and Violets
Oil on Canvas
34" x 34"
$3750.00

When I start a painting I have a very general idea of where I am going. No set destination, no completely formed picture in my head. I like it that way, it keeps it interesting for, the not knowing. The discovery of lines, and shapes, and color combinations.

This just such a painting. I knew I wanted the composition to be dynamic, but I had no idea what color this horse would be.

I love a good surprise.

Happy New Year!

Detail of Oil on Canvas
40" x 60"

Some paintings seem to have their own timeframe. They can not be forced into being finished, they have to evolve. To unfold. To emerge in stages. No amount of struggling to make it happen sooner works. This can be very frustrating for the artist, especially  if they are working on a deadline.

This is just such a painting. It won't be completed until sometime next year, so I have something to look forward to.

Hoping all of you have an abundant New Year!

If you are in the Scottsdale area, stop in and take a look.

Time Management

Detail of painting in progress.

I wish I had more time to be in the studio. This painting has been progressing at a snail's pace. There are always so many little things that I have to do, that by the time I turn my full attention to this painting there is only an hour or so left of daylight. So this week, everything else can go to hell in a hand basket as I will be working on it first!

and again........Poetry and Ponies

Mixed Media on Canvas
10"x 10"
SOLD

There are mornings when I really miss the South.

I spent a good deal of time driving this weekend.I really do some of my best daydreaming and pondering while I driving.I was thinking about painting and language.I love a well turned phrase.I love listening to or reading a well crafted story, one filled with succinct sentences that evoke a place or events that make me believe that I may have experienced it myself.

Why is that?

I think that maybe it is a human longing to belong to a tribe, a group a family. A desire to belong and be understood. A desire to believe"I am not alone and my life matters".

So why do I paint?

This week I believe I paint to bear witness to what I love. I want to share what I love. I want it to be understood, that I was here and for a brief moment that is my life, I loved horses.

Cover of the Chronicle of the Horse

"L'air du Temps"
Oil on Canvas
40" x 60"
$7950.00

When I first picked up an issue of the Chronicle of the Horse I wanted to be on the cover! It reminds me of the song by Dr. Hook and Medicine Show , "On the Cover of the Rolling Stone", that's the feeling!

So over the years I have been fortunate enough to have my work grace the cover. You never now when it's going to happen. So this morning when I went to see who was on the cover it was me! Or rather my painting.

This is a very nice way to start the day.

L'Air du Temps

"L'Air du Temps"
Oil on Canvas
40" x 60"
$7950.00

I  was quite uncomfortable using such a bright palette for in this painting. The bright blues, greens, and roses keep me guessing. Thankfully I moved through my doubt and I am very pleased with the results.

Three Weeks!

Detail
Unfinished Painting
40" x 60"

I will be able to work in the studio a little this weekend. After that I leave for vacation! Sun, sand, a few of those Tropical Drinks with a tiny parasol artfully tucked into the glass, and shrimp!

I can hardly wait to see my friends.

I'll be gone for a little over 2 weeks. Which means, after this weekends studio time it will be THREE WEEKS before I can start working on this painting again.

Think I'll take some watercolours and paper with me.
