Horses, Horses, Horses!….and little girls.

I had a fabulous time up at The Event at Rebecca Farm, in Kalispell, Montana. Beautiful horses, horse people, dogs, and lots of little girls.

An eleven or twelve year old pony clubbed asked me if I had painted all of the artwork displayed in my booth. I told her I had. She very seriously walked into the middle of my booth and with hands on hips surveyed it while nodding. Solemnly she pronounced "Good job" and left.

A girl of about eight came in with two of her siblings. The looked at the paintings and made comments to each other, grabbed a piece of candy and headed out. The eight year turned and came back. "Did you do all of theses?" she asked. I said yes. She stood still for a moment, through her arm up and exclaimed "Fantastic!" and left.

Those two were the cherries on top of my ice cream sundae of a trip.

An Intaglio printed on a warm stone colored sheet of Stonehenge. The print is hand pulled with the use of an etching press from an incised zinc plate.

I finished this painting earlier this week and had Tom Alexander photograph it for me. He does  beautiful work and I am able to see the painting square inch by square inch it I wish.

There is something bittersweet about finishing a painting. You are ending your involvement with it as an artist, as a creator. The new relationship with it is hard to describe. There is a good deal of satisfaction in gazing at the finished work and a bit of pride, but there is also a edge of sadness, of longing to be involved in the process of painting and creating. 

And so, there is only one cure for this malaise, today I start a new painting.

This is an original hand pulled Monoprint. It reminds me of summer here in the high desert. Everything bakes in the sun and then suddenly the rains come. Everything become quite verdant in a matter of hours and we are renewed, refreshed, until next summer.

New Card

This is the new card! Spring Romp on Fabriano Medioevalis natural white paper, with envelope 8.25" x 6.25". I love this paper, it is made in a factory that has been producing paper since 1264. This paper is hand torn. Makes me long to go to Italy.

I love printmaking. I gives you such a different surface than direct drawing or painting. I am also impatient, and love the immediate  result you have when working on a drawing or painting, no proofing.

Working with silkscreens, watercolor, graphite, and a clear acrylic silkscreen medium I produced this Mono Serigraph. I printed both of these on a piece of Stonehenge that I had toned with watercolor.

Love it when you can combine techniques and media.

Studio Mayhem

One area of collage materials waiting for divine inspiration.

Oh look, another area of collage materials waiting…..

I would love to blame this on some sort of disorder. I do this because I have an attention deficit disorder. I am dyslexic, so it makes things harder for me to organize. I have whatever……..The truth of the matter is that I allow myself to wander. I wander from painting to painting. I wander from collage to watercolor. I wander from subject to subject, and I like the wandering. My biggest problem, if we want to call it that, is that I am self-indulgent when it comes to the creative process and I LOVE that I am. It leads to some glorious discoveries!

However, every once in awhile I have to clean up the studio. My self-indulgence leads to quite few "blue" verbal out bursts, several bags of garbage, and more than a couple of hours vacuuming, dusting and mopping.

Oh well, at the end of the day I really wouldn't have it any other way.
