Meet George!
I was minding my own business on a Sunday evening when I got a phone call. My friend and trainer said that she thought someone had just posted a picture of my new horse on FaceBook and that I was to call the trainer of this Thoroughbred. This is the picture I saw of George. I got the phone number, called the trainer and after a very brief conversation told him that my trainer would call him and make shipping arrangements.
Easy peasey .
George is currently eating all the hay and grass he can get his mouth around in North Carolina.
Tomorrow is George's official birthday and he will be 9 years old.

Student Drawing
We have been working on measuring the object for accuracy in drawing from observation. Some of them understood this instantly, others are struggling with the concept.
So last night I gave each student a crayon of a different colour. I set up a stool on a pedestal and had them start drawing. I stressed the importance of measuring and that they should make every attempt to get it right. After about 10 minutes of working on their drawing I had them move over one space and start drawing and correcting the drawing of another student. They repeated this until they came back to their original drawing.
Hallelujah! Several of them had a break through and understood how and why they should measure. So proud of them! These drawings are from my class last night.

Perceived Landscapes
Angle of Repose
Mixed Media & Oil on Birch
20" x 40"
$2750.00
Yesterday I hung a show at the Flagstaff Arboretum. What a joy to be out there on a beautiful day. Best part as an artist, unloading art and hanging 16 pieces in under an hour! If only the rest of my life would go as easily.
Thanks to Elizabeth Vogler for all her help.
Below is my artist statement for the show.
Perceived Landscapes
I am fascinated by what and how people perceive things. Objects, events, and landscape. How what we see is understood through an emotional filter.
I have been drawing and painting my favorite cinder cone for more than a decade. It does not stand alone on a flat plain, however this is how I see it in my minds eye. It is scarred by excavation that has thankfully not progressed.
When I see this cinder cone I feel comforted. A deep sense of well being that stretches beyond me. Beyond time, as I know it; stretching to the edges of the eternal. It makes my heart sing.
The paintings in this collection are a visual dialog of how I understand what I feel about the land. My hope is that it will broaden your perspective.

Every summer I am overcome with colour. It is everywhere! A virtual riot of colour starts in my jungle of a garden, where Sunflowers compete with Sweet Peas and Zinnias. Poppies still holding out, but promising to be spectacular in a few days.
"Butterfly Garden" Yellow was purchased from my studio before I took a picture of it.
I always start a floral or two in the spring and finishing them in the summer. Kind of like my garden.

$4750.00
SOLD
I was working at West of the Moon Gallery last friday for First Friday Art Walk. Shonto Begay is the featured artist there this month and he has quite a following.I was not surprised that the Gallery was full to crowed from 6:00 to 9:30 but, I was amazed by how many people were out and about.
Towards the end of the evening I was talking to another artist who had an opening reception that night at another gallery. He was very please with the turn out and response to his paintings and that he had sold some of his art. One of the painting that he sold was not the painting that received the most compliments. We then started talking about how we each have two or three pieces of artwork that people love. They are always talked about with great excitement and highly praised, and we both still have these paintings. We just figure that whoever is suppose to own them just hasn't come along yet.
The painting above is one of these paintings.

Again; Poetry and Ponies
Mixed Media on Canvas
10" x 10"
$225.00
I am surprised that I still have this painting. I thought that it would be one of the first sold out of the show last spring. Oh well, it's one of my favorites and is currently residing on my bedroom wall.
Poetry and Ponies revisited,
I spent a good deal of time driving this weekend.I really do some of my best daydreaming and pondering while I driving.I was thinking about painting and language.I love a well turned phrase.I love listening to or reading a well crafted story, one filled with succinct sentences that evoke a place or events that make me believe that I may have experienced it myself.
Why is that?
I think that maybe it is a human longing to belong to a tribe,a group a family.A desire to belong and be understood.A desire to believe"I am not alone and my life matters".
So why do I paint?
This week I believe I paint to bear witness to what I love.I want to share what I love.I want it to be understood, that I was here and for a brief moment that is my life,I loved horses.

Happy New Year!!!
Under Painting
Acrylic on Canvas
40"x 60"x 2"
Good by 2011 and Hello Gorgeous!
This under painting is my clean slate. It is nebulous. The change in light will reveal some shapes and others will disappear. I will have a vague idea of where this painting is going. What I want to explore and discover, but like a gift, what the finished painting will become will be a surprise.
Here's to 2012 being a wonderous gift.
