Printmaking

Yesterday I had the opportunity to drive up to Richmond and print.I have not had access to a press for several months and I was in heaven. The press studio has large windows that let in plenty of light. It is very quite and serene even though it's in the middle of Richmond.
I am a very lucky girl!

Pretty in Pink

I love pink.Pink is one of my favorite colours.People who know me can't quite get their heads around that.In the late 70's and early 80's I frequented shows where Punk bands would be playing.I routinely dress in Pink & Black.A close friend once commented that I looked like a Bunny Funeral. One of my proudest moment.Pink just gets bad press.Anyway, I felt like I was going out on a limb when I started this painting. Now that it's finished I love it too!

Anyone who has had experience with Spanish horses know how magnificent they can be.There is an air of nobility that these horses posses."Iberian I " is a painting of one these horses. It is currently being shown at West of the Moon Gallery in Flagstaff,AZ. The painting is oil on cradled panel,24"x36"x1" and is absolutely stunning in person. The colour is vibrant and sings.

Surfaces

I never leave a white surface alone for very long.I subscribe to the" any mark is better than no mark" school. This is the first wash of colour this sheet of paper will receive.I will add at least two more washes of colour and apply various watercolour techniques to create a surface that has texture and depth. Then, and only then I will start the painting.

Colour

I love colour.Bright hard candy colour, hot summer garden colour, cool puddles of shadow colour.I love it all.I love the way one colour shimmers next to one and recedes next to another. The way colour has an identity that is effected by its surrounding, that it changes with the light.I believe it is magical.

Clean Slate

I take quite a bit of care in preparing the surfaces that I paint on.I sand and gesso and sand again, then I repeat. The result is a smooth brilliant white panel or canvas. At tis point the possibilities are endless.

Horses,horses,horses!

"Horses, horses, horses, that's all I ever hear from you."my third grade teacher admonished."All you ever do is draw, write, talk HORSES!I don't want to hear about horses again!"Clearly my Mrs.Turner was not a horse lover and may not have even liked children.
As I would continued my reluctant journey through the public school system,I would run into several teachers who shared Mrs.Turner's sentiments.Apparently a student who spent several hour a day staring out the classroom windows, daydreaming about riding, grooming and just plain, keeping company with horses, wasn't their idea of a model student.
I was occasionally sent to the principles office for my transgressions. The offenses were minor in my opinion.Talking with friends, doodling, drawing on the test, and all horse related.
Why couldn't these people understand,I was not obsessed with horses,I was clearly possesed by horses, and what a glorious thing that is to be!
I find it a little bit ironic that I am an equine artist. It is my job to draw, paint, daydream and talk about horses. To fill my studio with amazing images of horses.
I am a happy girl!

When I was in my early twenties I was exposed to dressage.I caught a bad case of it.I'm still symptomatic after all the years, and sometimes my paintings reflect it.
I have always been torn as to which I had rather be doing riding or painting. This past year my horse has been out of commission so I have happily spent time painting and drawing on sunny days with no twinge of guilt.
Likewise my horse has been having the time of his life.Eating grass and hanging out with his buddies.
This painting is of a horse preforming the Classical Dressage movement,Levade.I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
This painting is 30"x22",mixed media on watercolour paper with 22kt gold leaf.

Spring!

Two weeks ago I woke up to 7 inches of snow. Yesterday I picked daffodils and smelled the peach blossoms. The robins are out in force and the blue birds are building nests.I am so glad it is Spring!

Saturday, March 14, 2009

I love this painting.I love the colour and the concentration of the horse.I love how it went together, emerged as it were from paper, pen, and paint.

The image is very sharp, but you get the idea.

This painting is 22"x30",mixed media on 300 lb Saunders Waterford  Watercolour paper.
